Sherman Ragland is the chairman of Tradewinds International Holdings, a member of the FORBES® Business Council, and a contributing author on entrepreneurship to FORBES.com.
In 1984, Ragland was one of 10 national recipients of the Johnson® & Johnson® Fellowship, a national minority leadership. Ragland selected the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania where he received his MBA in 1986. Ragland was a Wharton Public Policy Fellow and a member of the Dean’s (Russell Palmer) Advisory Committee for two years. Ragland is also a founding member of the Wharton Real Estate Center and a founding member of the Whitney M. Young Chair. From 1989-1991 Ragland was the President of the Wharton School Alumni Club of Washington, DC. Upon completing his MBA at Wharton in Real Estate Finance and Entrepreneurship, Ragland was hired by Xerox Corporation to serve as the chief project finance officer for Lansdowne, Virginia. He left Lansdowne to become a development manager for the city of Alexandria, Virginia, for the Oliver T. Carr Company, where he was responsible for several developments around the King Street metro.
In 1993, Ragland founded Tradewinds International Holdings, an investment advisory firm directly responsible for disposing and privatizing more than $21.0 Billion in federally owned assets. Significant achievements included: creation and management of the US Spectrum Auction Program for the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from 1993- 1999; disposition of defaulted government-held mortgages and unsecured notes for the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) and US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) from 1994-1999; assisting the US General Services Administration (GSA) in the redesign of its process for acquiring Federal real estate facilities for the US Public Buildings Service(GSA-PBS), and managing the Fixed Base Operation (FBO), private jet facility, at Reagan National Airport.
In 2001, Ragland created Tradewinds Realty Partners, and Realinvestors®, which is the nation’s only state-certified professional school, dedicated to teaching people the skills necessary to become successful in real estate investing. Ragland is a member of the Board of Advisors (BOV) to the President of Towson University, a member of the President’s Campaign Cabinet for the President of Bowie State University, and a member of the Prince George’s Economic Development Incentive Fund (EDIF). He was Vice Chairman of the Board of the Prince George’s Financial Services Corporation (FSC), past Chairman of the Prince George’s County Chamber of Commerce, a past Commissioner of the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), and a past Commissioner for the Planning Commission for the City of Alexandria, where he lived from 1987-1999.
He lives in Bowie MD with his wife, son, and two rescue fur babies, Marco and Bruno. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Towson University, an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, a Master’s in Urban Planning from the University of Virginia and is a Certified Commercial Institute Member of the CCIM Institute of the National Association of Realtors.
